But where did the significance of EWIS originate:
In 1996, a 747 airplane exploded mid-air which brought concerns about wiring systems in airplanes to the public's attention. The probable cause of the accident was the ignition of flammable vapors in the fuel tank, likely due to a wiring failure that let a spark enter the fuel tank. Two years later, an MD-11 airplane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, and although the exact cause could not be determined, findings suggest that wire arcing occurred in the area where the fire possibly originated. The investigation of these incidents and the subsequent investigations of other aircraft showed a series of common problems and prompted competent organizations to establish standards and more precise approaches to the importance of wiring systems.
