Drag Rope

The drag rope, or compensator, serves two purposes. It is a long, heavy rope that trails the balloon in order to slow down the balloon’s vertical and horizontal speed in landing operations before the basket touches down. If a landing is aborted, the rope is automatically recovered and can be used again. In areas without electrical power lines, balloons can “drag rope” for many kilometres at a time without having to drop sand or release gas.
